Its smiles better in Trafford as residents have voted the borough and Wigan as the two happiest places to live in Greater Manchester.

According to a government wellbeing survey, Trafford residents rated their happiness an average of 7.7 out of 10, gaining joint first place with Wigan who achieved the same score.

The result highlights what Trafford has to over in terms of places to visit, excellent performing schools and its green spaces. As Trafford Council’s highly successful Trafford Festival highlighted, there is a lot to see and do in the area.

Cllr Sean Anstee, Leader of Trafford Council, said: “We are delighted that Trafford’s residents have scored their level of happiness so highly, I live here and I love it – it is a place that welcomes everyone and provides them with education, jobs and leisure.

“To have our residents say it is in the top happiest places in greater Manchester shows that despite difficult financial conditions we are doing something right in our continued improvement of the borough.”

The survey, delivered by The Office of National Statistics, has been running annually since 2011, and investigates the level of personal wellbeing amongst adults in the UK to better understand how they feel about their lives. The personal well-being questions are a part of the wider Measuring National Well-being programme, which aims to look beyond gross domestic product (GDP) at what matters most to people in the UK.

Theresa Grant, Chief Executive of Trafford Council, said: “It is incredibly satisfying to discover that Trafford Residents rate their level of happiness so highly. The borough is home to a number of top attractions including intu Trafford Centre, Old Trafford Football Ground and Lancashire County Cricket Club all of which bring enjoyment and investment to our residents.

“Trafford Council and its entire staff work tirelessly in order to provide residents with a fantastic service across the board. It is through continued investment and improvement that we are able to provide an exemplary service to our residents, and we hope that through our work, we can maintain the high level of happiness felt by our residents.
