S oHALE were invited and excited to taste the Great British Sunday Lunch ‘The greyhound’ produces and we arrived promptly at 1.30 to a busy service. The pub as you would expect fits perfectly into its country surroundings and it amazing to realise that the countryside is literally a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Hale.

Ordering a lovely cold glass of Chairo rose Blush wine from the menu which is one of many wines sold by the glass as well as by the bottle, we perused the menu as the choice is fantastic and reading through it makes it a exciting but difficult decision so we left it to Laura our waitress to decide for us.

Seated at a window seat and looking out across the road and to the countryside it was simply perfect a log fire and busy pub catering for families, cyclists, couples, people with dogs the staff went about their business effortlessly making the whole experience a pleasant one.

Starting with Button and Oyster Mushrooms on toast with creamy garlic and herb sauce and pea shoots garnish. Served in a warm bowl (a nice touch) this dish is rich luscious and velvety with hints of pepper and completely Moorish served on home baked bread a definite favourite of mine.

Next was Smooth chicken liver and pork pate with Manchester Star ale chutney with slices of char grilled toasted bloomer which increases the look of the dish and this dish does not disappoint. The pate is meaty, tasty and it has plenty of butter on the top of the pate for all you butter lovers out there (and it’s creamy too!) It is a substantial starter.


The Mains were served on great oval warmed plates – the meals were substantial but not overpowering the roast having its distinctive areas place on the plate made it really pleasant to the eye and we could not wait to try. The Gravy was fantastic and brought the whole plate together. Meat was beautifully cooked – we were lucky enough to try the beef and the turkey and they were succulent moist and easy to eat. The Yorkshire Pud was a masterpiece and incredibly was light and airy. Vegetables were well presented cut well and cooked to appeal to most palettes a true compliment to the chef. Mashed potato was under the meat and smooth and well seasoned and the roasties were cooked in goose fat and were delicious. Tearing ourselves away from this plate to….

10oz rib eye steak served with cherry vine tomatoes, mushroom, onion rings and chunky chips – off the specials menu. The Hand cut chips were seasoned well and crispy outside and beautifully soft inside exactly like a chip should be. The steak was served medium rare and was a delight to eat – being this cut of steak the taste was wonderful and with the lovely vegetables which were glazed and soft and delicate worked great with the powerful tasty mustardy creamy peppery sauce the whole plate did not disappoint at all. Now the onion rings well – there is only one way of explaining those and that it more more more more please – Mark Head Chef you are the onion ring ‘King’

After a small break the ice cream sundae arrived at our table served in a glass mug it was so.. Inviting to find out the layers that were in this lovely desert starting was warm brownie, white chocolate ice cream, fresh berries, and chocolate ice cream and finishing on top with cream and flaked almonds. This desert surprisingly was really light and fresh due to the berries being amongst the layers. It was not overly sweet and quite individual the fruit was tarty and created a taste explosion. It was a great reinvention of a 70s ice cream sundae which was always a major player on the desserts menu.

Bakewell tart with pouring cream – this plate of food looked stunning with its glaze presentation. The Pastry was short crisp and there was no soggy bottom here (the bakeoff would be glad to know). It was full of the almond taste and a proper tart – lovely

What we noticed whilst sitting in the restaurant part of the pub was there was a constant come and go of people and we had a lovely eating experience. It was a cosy warm environment and service was excellent. The staff were attentive, and constantly clearing and tidying making the whole place look at its best all of the time. Nothing seemed to be too much of a problem and they were efficient and knowledgeable people.

So Hale thank Matt and his staff for a thoroughly enjoyable way of spending a Sunday Afternoon just a stone’s throw from Hale.
