SO-Hale was very excited to be invited to experience dining at Neighbourhood in Spinningfields Manchester – sister restaurant to Victor’s Hale. Easily accessed by public transport from Hale train station or the metro from Altrincham it is just 20 minutes away.
Arriving at 7.30 we were met by Sarah front of House and Kieron who looks after both restaurants and we chose to have a drink at the bar before going to our table. The seating at the bar is quite unique usual bar stool and then winged back chairs along the side of the bar which we chose. A chilled glass of Minuty which was quite lovely and a classic tanquerey Gin with fever tree tonic and lime to kick start the evening.
Looking at the menu which was very appetising we chose to let Sarah, Kieron and Freya our waitress for the evening offered their opinion on what we should try based on their favourites best sellers and new to the menu.
Seating in lovely soft pink leather style circular bunkets away from the busiest part of the restaurant we settled in our seats ready for a great night. Chosing to have our meal in a tapas style evening of one or two items coming to the table allowing us to photograph exactly what we ate and try each dish individually.
First off we began with NBHD Rolls and Sashimi – duck rolls and beetroot cured salmon roll. The duck was a comfort food parcel the smell was amazing and the salmon was seaside light and fresh. The Japanese mayo was really lovely.
Next was steak tartare with egg yolk and crispy bread rounds. This was extremely light delicate flavoursome and a melting pot for your tastebuds.
Mozzarella and tomato Pizzata was peppery sweet and had a great pizza smell with basil oil.
Kieron’s favourite being the short rib tacos with maple glaze and crunchy asian slaw was a wow coriander tasting crunchy warm soft great texture holds together well and its so good you don’t want to share this one.
NBHD best seller of the starters was tempura prawns – these were light fresh and really need to be eaten immediately to enjoy the quality of the tempura batter at its very best a fish lover delight..
Main courses were a sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce which was truly effortless to eat seasoned to perfections and the sauce was soft and light and so so enjoyable.
Chicken Dinner – do not be frightened of ordering this and thinking you are going to receive a boring meal – oh no it comes with a baked scone a fabulous sauce carrots beautiful potatoes which are mashed to perfect texture and the chicken well salty crispy chicken perfectly cooked to the next level the taste of the chicken gravy and the fried chicken is enviable. We learnt from the chef that the gravy is in fact sausage gravy!
Of course it would not be a NBHD night without their signature box of salted caramel donuts which were comforting, gorgeous, lusciously light and tasty. Cookies and Honey Milk – is a definite beautiful large cookies on a plate with this just fantastic lightly whipped honeyed milk like something we had not tasted before truly enjoyable.
Drinking the merlot by the glass and sauvignon blanc and with desert a lovely cold crisp desert wine it finished what was a great night – chatting with the staff and the chef for the evening and seeing that these guys truly know their ‘stuff’ we had a taxi ordered for us and we skipped home full and enjoying every morsel that we ate.
