Sohale were invited to sample the winter menus at this lovely country inspired establishment The Oakwood and on arrival was met with lovely warm friendly staff and a very warm welcome.

Sampling the house Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine beautifully chilled we sat down and discussed the menu with Dan, Jason and Jenny and decided upon (although it was tricky as there was so many great items on the menu) firm favorites of the staff.

Starting with Cheddar Cheese Soufflé which was superb, light and tasty with a pouring jug of cheese sauce just what was needed for a winter’s evening. Fish Soup, sounds too plain in its name was amazing, smooth, felt like the sea was so close fresh tasty and served with croutons, grated cheese and light garlic and saffron rouille a must for fish lovers.

After a small pause and another sample of the bubbly we opted for Duck leg comfit with a clack cherry sauce red wine lardons baby onions mushrooms and super smooth mash a very well balanced dish.  A complete plate of comfort and joy tasty not greasy and quality with each mouthful and eye catching on the plate.

Pie of the week was a chicken and mushroom and was a golden brown crust topped pie and the topping of super light flaky pastry was just enough.  There was plenty of chicken and the sauce was moreish.  Served with baby chantennay carrots which were buttery and aldente. We had a bottle of the kingsdown natural sparkling water and watched around us and noticed how relaxed but busy happy environment we were sat in and the staff were attentive and caring.  We discussed how well each course was well seasoned and had well balanced flavors something difficult to get right.

Dessert was pistachio souffle which was flavorsome and light airy and luxurious and had a slight crunch around the exterior.  Towards the bottom there was a thin layer of wonderful bitter dark chocolate which paired well with the souffle and gave intensity for a small period of time along with the chocolate ice cream. We described this as a ‘cloud’ dessert.

Thank you to all the staff for making us so welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal we certainly were not disappointed and we will see you very soon.
