I was a secondary school teacher for 10 years, a job which I enjoyed in parts but I could never see myself doing for the rest of my life. At a birthday party in 2012, I saw a balloon modeller and thought it might be quite good fun have a go myself! There were a few unsuccessful attempts at first but with practise I soon built up a good repertoire! Soon, I took my balloons to friends events and made a few balloons for the children there – people loved them and were asking if I could go to their parties!
It made me think…at the time, I had a 9 month old daughter and a 3 year old son. We were paying a lot for childcare and I was in a job that wasn’t really for me. So I quit teaching. I quit to become a full time dad and do a few balloons on the side! Obviously I am very lucky in the fact that my wife has a good enough job to let me take the risk but it was the best thing I have ever done!
Over time, my skills have improved and I attend birthday parties, weddings, christenings, fun days, shop openings, events and much more with the benefit of being able to spend the majority of the time bringing up my children!
I also love doing ‘big’ builds – clearly they can’t be done at parties but can be ordered in advance – examples include motorbikes, biplanes, massive masks and birds! One of my favourites is a big motorbike – one of the bikes was even picked up recently by ‘8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown’ for use on the show!
If you haven’t witnessed the power of balloons, it is unbelievable with children (and adults!) having no problem waiting their turn to receive a mermaid, motorbike, Elsa, Spiderman or octopus! I genuinely believe I have the best job in the world – something that is backed up when I see the expressions of the children when they get their balloon!
